Spring Thaw Symposium - "The Private Garden"


The 2013 Spring Thaw Symposium – "The Private Garden" will be held on Saturday, March 23 featuring author Marty Wingate, along with Jim Nau from Ball Horticulture Company, Richard Hawke, Plant Evaluation Manager at Chicago Botanic Garden, and Zannah Crowe from Monches Farm.

Marty WingateMarty Wingate, “Landscaping for Privacy”

Marty Wingate writes and speaks about gardens and travel. She is the author of Landscaping for Privacy and three other garden books. Marty’s garden articles appear in a variety of publications, including “The American Gardener” and “Country Gardens”, and she is a weekly guest on KUOW (94.9 FM), Seattle’s NPR station – for which she won a Silver Trowel Award from the Garden Writers of America.

 

Richard HawkeRichard Hawke, “When Pretty Isn’t Enough: Perennial Trials at Chicago Botanic Garden”

Richard Hawke is the Plant Evaluation Manager at the Chicago Botanic Garden, and is responsible for the comparative evaluation of over 1,200 taxa of herbaceous perennials, vines, shrubs and small trees, including the oversight of a 16,000 sq. ft. green roof trial. The Plant Evaluation Program  is one of the largest and most diverse in the nation. Richard has a horticulture degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and has worked at several Midwest botanical gardens, including the Paine Arboretum in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, and The Holden Arboretum in Kirtland, Ohio.

 

Jim NauJim Nau, “Using Containers in the Landscape”

Jim Nau manages the greenhouses and gardens of the Ball Horticultural Company in West Chicago, Illinois. Jim is the author of two books; the Ball Culture Guide and the Ball Perennial Manual as well as the editor of the “Ball RedBook –18th Edition” that was published this year.
He is the Past President and current judge for All America Selections as well the Past President of the Association of Specialty Cut Flower Growers (ASCFG).

 

Zannah CroweZannah Crowe, “Underutilized Treasures of the Bulb World”

Zannah holds a degree in Landscape Architecture from UW-Madison and has been working as a professional horticulturist for over 25 years. She is currently employed at Monches Farm, a perennial plant nursery in Colgate, Wisconsin.
