| Spring is always an
exciting time of the year for gardeners. Those first blooms
are a sign of better things to come.
Plan your garden to have and
extended bulb bloom. Crocus, hyacinths, daffodils, scilla, and
many of the species tulips will give you early bloom.
Darwin-type tulips can be purchased in early (April),
midseason (late April to mid-May), and late season (mid-May to
early June) varieties. Always remember when selecting bulbs:
the later the bloom, the longer it will take for the plant to
ripen off. Therefore the foliage will be part of your garden
longer into the summer season.
Tulips can be planted in drifts
of color or mixed. In both cases the bloom time has to be the
same to get the best visual effect in the garden. You can
select one of the many mixes most bulb catalogs offer. If you
mix your own bulbs, put them in a large basket and stir them
up well to assure a more random, natural effect. Plant tulips
6 inches apart for a nice display. |
