(Green Bay, WI) – Did you know that Green Bay Botanical Garden held its first annual Spring Thaw Symposium in 1985? Even before our gardens opened to the public we were holding classes, symposia, and other events for our members and other gardening enthusiasts.
Join us this year for “New Digs – From Our New Facility to What’s New in Plants!”

Featuring: Susan Martin “A New Spin on Some Old Favorites”
Susan Martin is an avid gardener who has spent most of her professional career working in various aspects of the Green Industry including independent and mass merchant retail sales, garden design and maintenance, marketing, research, writing, public speaking, and photography. Currently, she is the Director of Marketing Communications for Walters Gardens in Zeeland, MI which is the largest wholesale grower of perennials in the United States. Susan is a native of Michigan where she has been gardening since the age of four in both sandy and clay soils in zones 4-6.
Featuring: Ed Lyon “New Plants: Promise and Reality”
Ed Lyon is Director of the Allen Centennial Gardens in Madison, Wisconsin, a position he has held since 2008.
He has also worked at Chicago Botanic Garden, Olbrich Botanical Gardens and Rotary Botanical Gardens. He writes and speaks for both public and professional audiences across the Midwest. He is emphatic about focusing on gardening with regionality as a primary focus. Most importantly, he is an avid gardener with dirt under his fingernails.
Featuring: Dave Wanninger “What’s New in Hydrangeas? Lots!”
Dave Wanninger is Horticulturist in Charge at Boerner Botanical Gardens in Hales Corners, Wisconsin, which is part of the Milwaukee County Park system. Previously, Dave was chief horticulturalist at Beaver Creek Nursery, a wholesale nursery specializing in newer, cutting-edge plant species and varieties. In his more than twenty five years in horticulture, Dave has also been nursery manager at a large independent garden center, and owned and operated a small landscaping business. He has also been a long time instructor in the Horticulture and Landscaping program at Blackhawk Technical College in Janesville, Wisconsin.
Fees and Registration:
$45 for GBBG Members; $60 for Non-Members; $25 for Students
The cost includes all speakers, demonstrations, handouts, lunch and refreshments.
